The good news: the Nigerian Immigration Service has rolled out options that now make it possible to start and complete your passport renewal process without physically visiting the embassy in many cases.

How It Works: Steps to Renew Your Nigerian Passport Abroad

1. Visit the Official NIS Portal

Go to the Nigeria Immigration Service portal. Select “Passport Renewal” and choose your country of residence.

2. Fill the Application Form

Complete the online form accurately. Upload a recent passport photograph with a white background and scan your old passport data page.

3. Make Payment Online

Pay the required fees online using a debit/credit card. Keep your payment receipt — you’ll need it.

4. Biometrics & Capture

In many countries, NIS has partnered with service providers or mobile enrollment centers. You’ll be notified to visit a designated center near you for biometrics only. No embassy visit needed for the full process.

5. Passport Delivery

Once processed, your new passport can be mailed to your address or picked up at the designated center. Processing times vary by country but typically take 2-6 weeks.
